What do safe security grades mean?
S1, S2 and 0–V grades help compare a safe’s tested burglary resistance.
The security grade allows safes to be compared by their tested burglary resistance. This is more reliable than marketing names, door thickness or weight, because the assessment is based on a defined testing methodology.
EN 14450: S1 and S2
The EN 14450 standard applies to secure storage cabinets. S2 is higher than S1. These models are often chosen for homes and offices when verified basic protection is required, but an EN 1143-1 grade is not necessary.
EN 1143-1: 0, I, II and higher
EN 1143-1 applies to safes with higher tested burglary resistance. The higher the grade, the more rigorous the testing the construction has passed. However, the highest grade is not always necessary: consider the value of the contents, the risk and your insurer's requirements.
How to check the grade
- find the rating plate inside the safe;
- check the manufacturer, model, standard and grade against the documentation;
- check the certification body and certificate number;
- do not treat the words «reliable safe» as confirmation of a grade.
What the grade does not show
A burglary-resistance grade does not confirm protection against fire or water. Correct installation is also essential: certification does not replace anchoring in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions.
Where to compare models
Start with the burglary-resistant safes section, then select a level: S1, S2, Grade 0 or Grade I.
